Girls Uniform List
Most uniform items and all dance shoes (except trainers) must be purchased from a specialist dance shop. 'Duo Dance' in Herne Hill is the closest – 020 7274 4517.
'Dancia' in Covent Garden and ‘Julienne’ in Beckenham also stock some items of our uniform.
After an initial period of half a term, it is expected that your daughter will be wearing appropriate uniform. Ensure your daughter’s name is on each piece of clothing. Long hair should be neatly tied back in a pony tail or classical ballet bun and any hair band(s) should match the leotard or hair colour. No jewellery allowed (including earrings).
Melody Movement Uniform
- Skirt and cardigan to be purchased from the dance school at first lesson
- Any white vest and pants or white babygrow to be worn underneath
- Bare feet
Leotards
- ‘Emilie’ ballet dress by Roch Valley in pink matte nylon lycra (Nursery 1 & 2 and Preparatory dance & tap)
- ISTD ‘Molly’ style by Roch Valley in lavender cotton lycra (Pre-Primary to Grade 2 ballet and tap, Primary & Grade 1 modern)
- Black cotton lycra leotard by Capezio – own choice of style but without crossed straps (Grade 3 upwards ballet & tap)
- Cerise pink crushed velvet ‘biketard’ – only available fromDuo Dance (Grades 2 & 3 modern)
- Purple full length catsuit – can only be purchased directly from the dance school (Grade 4 modern / bronze jazz & upwards)
Skirts and Belts
- Skirt is attached to Emilie leotard (Nursery 1 & 2 and Preparatory dance & tap)
- Roch Valley wrap around chiffon skirt in lilac (Pre-Primary & Primary ballet classes and examinations). Please ensure the ballet skirt fits tightly on the waist, not hips.
- No skirts required for tap and modern or for Grade 1 ballet & upwards – Grades 1 & 2 ballet require a ballet belt in lavender to match the leotard (comes with leotard as standard)
- Circular National skirt (Primary and upwards National). Girls must be measured by a teacher and ordered in bulk from Duo Dance.
- You may need to adjust the button on the National skirt so that it fits tightly on the waist, not hips.
Cardigans/hoodie (optional)
- Woolly ballet crossover in light pink (not ‘ballet peach’) (Nursery 1 & 2 and Preparatory dance & tap)
- ‘Nicky’ style crossover by Roch Valley in lavender cotton lycra (Pre-Primary to Grade 2 ballet and tap)
- Black cotton lycra crossover (Grades 2 upwards ballet & tap)
- South London Dance Studios sweater (for warming up for Grade 2 modern upwards, & Levels 1, 2 & 3 jazz/street, & for general wear outside class). Sweaters can only be purchased directly from the dance school.
Socks/tights/leggings
- Pink ballet socks (Nursery to Grade 1 ballet & tap & Levels 1, 2 & 3 jazz/street)
- Pink ballet tights without seam (Grade 2 ballet upwards & Grade 2 tap)
- Black hipster bootleg jazz pants by Tappers and Pointers (Grade 3 tap / bronze tap upwards)
- Jazz pants or tracksuit bottoms (Levels 1, 2 & 3 street/jazz)
Ballet Shoes
- Pink leather full-sole ballet shoes with pink elastic (Nursery to Pre-Primary 2 ballet classes)
- Pink satin full-sole ballet shoes with pink elastic (Pre-Primary ballet examination)
- Pink leather full-sole ballet shoes with pink satin ribbons (Primary and Grade 1 ballet classes)
- Pink satin full-sole ballet shoes with pink satin ribbons (Primary and Grade 1 ballet examinations)
- Pink canvas split-sole ballet shoes with crossed pink elastic (Grade 2 ballet and upwards)
- Pink satin split-sole ballet shoes with pink satin ribbons or full-sole if need wide fitting shoe (Grade 2 ballet and upwards examinations)
- Demi pointe and pointe shoes with matte pink ribbons (when required)
Tap Shoes
- Roch Valley black leather tap shoes with elastic replacing the laces and with standard ball taps – heel taps not required but can be left on if already attached to shoes when bought (Preparatory tap)

- Katz or Capezio ‘character’ or ‘buckle bar’ tap shoes in black with teletone ball and heel taps (Grades 1 & 2 tap)

National Shoes
- Black leather by Freed – low heel with button fastening for small feet and higher heel with buckle fastening for bigger feet
- Modern and Street/Jazz Shoes
- Bare feet (Primary to Grade 2 modern)
- Foot thongs to match own skin colour (Grades 3 upwards modern)
- Normal trainers (not muddy!) (Levels 1, 2 & 3 jazz/street)
Uniform notes for lower school girls
- If your daughter is very cold in the studio, she may wear pink seamless ballet tights – no other tights though please! We do, however, prefer pink ballet socks. Children should not wear socks and tights at the same time!
- ‘Older’ beginners in Grade 1 and 2 ballet may wear pink seamless ballet tights instead of socks if they prefer.
- Vests and pants should not be worn under the ballet dress
- Please be careful when washing the pink ballet dress as they ‘pick-up’ colours easily
- Ballet shoes should not be worn outdoors

Wear anything comfortable – loose trousers are good with any top

Black canvas split-sole ballet shoes with crossed black elastic
Black leotard (Capezio with bra lining recommended – but without crossed straps)
